Approaching Winter and Rain: Your To-do List

Winterising your pool in four quick steps.

Changes in weather conditions bring along change to your swimming pool water balance.

It’s important to bare this in mind as we lead into the winter season when we trade splashing around in the water for huddling in front of the fireplace. Dramatic changes to your pool water levels can cause havoc to your water chemistry, especially when you add leaves to the equation. Rain, leaves and other organic matter can add a whole new dimension to the water environment.

What happens to my pool when it rains? When more (or less) rain water lands in your pool it changes the overall chemical concentration. Put simply, the rain dilutes your pool chemical concentration. The more rain you have in your pool, the more the fresh water will dilute the salt and chlorine levels.

Four steps to winterising your pool

  1. Make sure your chemicals are balanced – use a test kit or pop into your local pool professional to get some sound advice
  2. Tidy your pool – clear any unwanted debris, toys or objects
  3. Drain the water out of your pool – keep the water level half to two thirds up your skimmer box
  4. Protect your pool with a pool cover!

Like, share and comment on these tips – let us know if you find this useful! We’d love to hear from you.

Want to Save Time Cleaning Your Pool This Autumn?

Get the dirt on WinterKleen – all year round pool covers.

Uh huh we get it. Your have a heavy debris or dirt problem. You don’t want to spend hour after hour, weekend after weekend, slaving away cleaning your pool. And… you want a cover to help you keep the leaves and dirt out of your pool.

Well, we’ve got an industry-best product for you… a WinterKleen Pool Cover!

A WinterKleen pool cover is perfect, especially during these cooler wintery months.

 They save:

  • Leaves and debris entering pool
  • Time cleaning
  • Evaporation
  • Running costs
  • Chemical use
  • Water because it passes through
  • The pool from becoming a science experiment over extended periods of non-use.

WinterKleen covers are made with a fine polypropylene mesh that is strong to survive the elements and also lightweight for easy handling. This type of pool cover protects your pool from leaves, dirt and debris and also allows water through into the pool.

These covers work best when stretched over your pool during long periods when your pool isn’t being used. Leaves and dirt that fall on the cover can be blown or swept off the cover.

The finished cover stretches across your entire pool overlapping it by 20cms with tie down toggles about 80cms apart, anchored a further 20cms from the cover’s edge. The tie down toggles are easily pulled tight, one by one until taut.

WinterKleen covers are available in blue or green and are shaped with a square cut to fit over any shaped pool. Additional charges apply if you want the cover to mirror a shaped curvilinear pool as this requires a Daisy Expert to measure accurately.

A WinterKleen has an 8 year pro-rata warranty and is easily removed when it’s time to put on a Daisy solar pool cover. Treat yourself this autumn-winter season with a new WinterKleen!

Daisy Helping Disadvantaged Kids

Can you help?

Daisy’s Managing Director Derek Prince is teaming up with peers Marshall Tilby (Totally Workwear Chairman), Peter Scrivener (Loadex Hire General Manager) and Garth Munroe (Southwest Solid Surfaces Director) to take part in the 2015 Variety Creative Car Cruise taking place 19th – 22nd March to raise funds for Variety WA to help assist kids in need.

Derek and his team will be driving two vintage cars from Bunbury to Collie over the four-day cruise. There will be up to 40 cars participating in the popular annual event.

Huge thanks goes to many major Daisy suppliers have already kindly donated to the cause.

Before setting off on his journey, here’s what Derek has to say:

  • The main reason you’re participating? A business colleague knew I like my classic muscle cars and after he completed the event last year we spoke about the Variety cause and the opportunity to put something back into the community while still doing something we loved… the whole concept really appealed so thought I’d get involved for the first time this year.
  • So what’s the plan? We plan on having a bit of fun while raising money for sick, disadvantaged and special needs kids in WA.
  • What type of car will you be in? The car is a beautiful old 70 Ford Falcon XW GT.

How much money do you aim to raise? As much as possible, many of our suppliers have come on board and donated. We have many thousands donated already which is so amazing to see for such a great cause! Follow our journey with photos and updates on the Daisy Facebook page.

Budding WA creatives inspired by Daisy pool cover offcuts

Budding WA creatives inspired by Daisy pool cover offcuts

Daisy donates its pool cover offcuts to not-for-profit REmida WA to reduce its environmental footprint.

The old saying ‘one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure’ is certainly a proven truth in the re-use industry.

Over the last year Daisy donated each month a truckload full of pool cover offcuts and material to REmida WA, a not-for-profit education centre that collects clean and safe resources from local manufacturers which are used for childhood education, to enable imagination to blossom in a learning environment.

Daisy’s donations have ranged from pool cover offcuts and cardboard tubing to tie strings and rope spools. According to REmida WA General Manager Eden Lennox the vibrant colours and squishy texture of Daisy Pool Cover offcuts make them one of REmida’s top five most popular collected items. They are child safe, tactile and feel good for the kids!

Ms Lennox added that pool covers are always well liked and creatively reused in play space areas in primary schools, day care centres and at festivals like the Perth Writer’s and Beaufort Street Festivals, as well as at their own creative workshops.

REmida collects discarded materials from a selection of industrial areas around Perth and last year collected a total of 400m2 worth of product.

“We really value Daisy’s contributions – pool covers are an exciting and inspirational product for us and they are perfect because they come in larger shapes and sizes,” Ms Lennox said.

“Daisy represents one of the few industries that have really embraced the recycling aspect of manufacturing. They understand the idea of ‘reuse’ which is important because pool covers are a non-recyclable product that would otherwise go to landfill,” she said.

“We are also always well received by Daisy and their staff are always enthusiastic about helping us out which is quite rare, and appreciated as our business is managed by up to about 25 volunteers.”

Daisy Managing Director Derek Prince visited the REmida warehouse this week to find out what goes on behind the scenes of the hardworking collection truck:

“REmida is a great initiative to be involved with as they work tirelessly to turn manufacturing waste into a resource and helping companies like us reduce their environmental footprint – this is what Daisy is passionate about,” Mr Prince said.

“We donate all we can and recycle most of the waste we generate as well,” he said.

“REmida’s group of volunteers are so dedicated to the job and do really well in encouraging community members to reuse discarded material to create something beautiful and I’m glad to be a part of it,” he added.

“Last year’s Beaufort Street Festival peacock and the aquatic diorama created recently by one of our local WA schools were really creative and is satisfying to see our Daisy pool cover offcuts being put to good use!”

Besides pools covers, other top donations include silver tape, rubber blocks, coloured paper products, fabrics, vinyls and cardboard tubes. Among the zaniest items ever received by REmida are 1.3m bear skins and hot pink and bright yellow coloured sticky tubular plastic moulds from injection plastic moulding.

A call out to other manufacturer suppliers! If you are a local manufacturer and have, or know one that has, any industry waste that can potentially be re-used, then please contact REmida WA for a free collection.

Donations are processed, sorted into colours, cut down to useable sizes and displayed in shelving in the REmida warehouse in West Perth so members can see the beauty of the items.

Member teachers and day care carers pay an annual membership fee to gain access to materials at any time. Members tend to adapt and design their classes depending on what’s available at the time.

About REmida WA

REmida was founded around the Italian Reggio Emilia Learning philosophy which originated in the Province of Reggio Emilia in Italy where the whole community is involved in the re-use of industry products. REmida is mostly involved with alternative thinking schools in WA where the Reggio Emilia philosophy is encouraged in their childhood education curriculum.

The organisation has been involved with at least 160-170 schools since their inception in 2004 and have seen a significant increase in the number of day care centres utilising their service.

A rockstar effort from our Best Splash Grand Prize Winner!

With BEST SPLASH entries received from all around Australia over the summer months, the competition was fierce on Facebook and Instagram.

Our December BEST SPLASH Winner Rebecca McLevie of WA also took home the Grand Prize, which was $2,000 worth of pool maintenance and supplies from her closest Daisy Expert Southside Pool Service.

Rebecca’s winning BEST SPLASH video now has more than 2100 views, over 50 shares and nearly 130 likes including from the band Sheppard whose song Geronimo was used in the creatively choreographed video.

Last week Rebecca was presented with her prize by our Daisy Managing Director Derek Prince and Jarred Parry from Southside Pool Services in Cannington, WA. Rebecca who was accompanied by her brother and cousin said her prize was going to her Grandad as it was his pool they used on Christmas Day to shoot the video: “We use Grandad’s pool all the time, we even have pool parties there where there can be over 30 of us and Grandad will cook for us on the BBQ,” she said.

“I was so happy winning the GoPro last time and even took it to our Bali holiday immediately. The grand prize is awesome and I want it to go to Grandad to help him. One of the first things he will probably get is a pool cover and roller because he has been talking about it for a while now so we might just order it for him.”

Jarred from Southside Pool Services said, “It still leaves him with plenty of the prize to look after his pool and we would be delighted to help Rebecca’s Grandad spend the rest of the prize money on the various maintenance and supplies that we have in store.”

When collecting her prize Rebecca said in the lead up to the end of the Challenge they were all watching the other entrants of the competition. “There were some real good ones there… we were getting a bit worried as the January winner was getting a lot of likes. Mum said the reach of the video got so much that she was getting friend requests through Facebook from people she knew in the UK,” she added.

If you haven’t already seen it, check out Rebecca’s video here. Congratulations to Rebecca once again on her clever entry. With the catchy music and unique choreography, you’re a worthy winner. Enjoy…

Creative campaign helps build retailer confidence

Pool industry’s creative campaign made a splash helping build retailer confidence against current trends

In the pool leisure industry, businesses are not selling products like chlorine, pumps or pool covers… they are selling lifestyle, fun and enjoyment in their customers’ back yard. When over two thirds of Australians make their buying decisions using the internet, businesses like Daisy need to more than ever be able to influence buying decisions online, as well as offline. This requires an integrated strategy using all media as well as a relevant campaign to engage the target audience.

According to Daisy Pool Covers and Rollers Managing Director Derek Prince, Daisy’s 2014/15 summer campaign #bestsplashchallenge, which officially closed at the end of January with the Grand Prize winner announced this week, tackled this head on.

“The #bestsplashchallenge utilised a pull and push strategy and engaged end customers as well as our retail channel. We built an online audience around fun in the backyard pool by encouraging people to do what we all do… jump in and make a splash! Our customers were reached through the social media Challenge to create the best splash ever and win by getting the most likes on Facebook or Instagram,” Derek said.

Daisy also supported retailers through in-store point of sale material and driving sales to their store through social media. Many retailers got involved promoting the Challenge as well as having a bit of fun.

Southside Pool Services, based in Cannington WA, was the Daisy retailer from which the January and Grand Prize winner Rebecca McLevie collected her prize so Owner Peter Schmidt said he was grateful for the opportunity for the extra promotional exposure and potentially a new customer for his store.

“We were delighted at the chance to be involved with this creative promotional campaign over the last few months, it has really helped build great awareness of our store,” said Peter.

“The combination of social media with the relevant campaign idea was spot-on given their target market is young families around Australia,” he said.

“The number of entrants over the three months exceeded our expectations, the exposure of the challenge to consumers was also beyond our expectations, and the interaction with our consumers was absolutely fantastic,” said Derek.

Announcing our January Best Splash Winner!

We had more than 30 BEST SPLASH entries in January on Facebook and Instagram.

Congratulations goes to Alex Dorrity of NSW for his original BEST SPLASH photo taken with friends at sunset near his home at Kingsley Beach. It was an amazing shot that gained over 106 likes on Facebook.

Alex was overseas when he heard the good news. However, one of the first things he did when he returned was visit his nearest Daisy Expert Poolside Davidson Pool & Spa Services at Salamander Bay. There he was presented with his new GoPro Hero Black Edition camera by Shop Owner Adam Parker.

Our winner Alex, who is currently in his second year of Uni studying to be a Pre School Teacher, was very pleased to win the Go Pro and said it was on his wish list! He said he found the competition on the internet by doing a Google on ‘Win a Camera’. Lucky him!

Alex said, “I dreamed of winning the Go Pro so I was so excited to hear that I’d won when I was on holiday in the US. I’d like to use my new Go Pro to do another ‘SPLASH’ for the Daisy Facebook Page.”

We look forward to seeing Alex’ next SPLASH! Check out his winning entry here:

From our Expert, Adam said he definitely saw future potential to use the promotion in his business and looking back, he said he could have used it to a bigger advantage in November 2014 when he had his Shop Open Day. He’s delighted to be a part of this win/ win idea!

Our BEST SPLASH Grand Prize Winner to be announced this week – stay tuned!
