Ducks or No Ducks!

Cute or messy?

At certain times around Australia, we’ll see beautiful wild ducks flying over our properties. And some of these ducks even call our pools home!

Cute? Hmmm… anyone who has had the unfortunate experience of even a single pair of ducks moving in will tell you they make one heck of a mess!

Duck excrement will dramatically change your pool chemistry. If the ducks swim in your pool, you will notice fairly quickly just how dramatic the change can be. They also tend to make your pool surrounds very messy and unpleasant.

And once the ducks have found your pool, they will keep coming back…until you do something about it.

A pool cover will stop ducks!

It is that simple! Place a pool cover over your pool, whether it be a solar pool cover or a WinterKleen cover, and as long as the water is covered the ducks will stop visiting. They will fly to another home and leave you in peace…apart from the big mess they might have left you!

What Do I Do With My Pool Over Winter?

The age old question of what to do with my pool when it’s not being used.

Well you have two main options

  1. Forget about it and let it turn into a frog pond until it warms up again or
  2. Keep it clean!

The most economical way to maintain your pool is by continuing to look after it. It will save you a lot of time, money and effort in the long run. Anything else is a false economy!

When summer returns, you’ll have to spend even more time and money to bring back the science experiment that was created in your pool by ignoring it over winter!

Some easy suggestions to help you through the winter months –

Firstly, keep safe.

  • Always add chemicals to water in a bucket and never add water to chemicals
  • Never mix different chemicals together
  • Always read chemical labels and follow their advice.

Cleaning your pool

  • Remove all floating debris by scooping and vacuuming
  • Clean your filtration equipment
  • Empty baskets, skimmer & pump lint pot
  • Clean your filter
    • Backwash the sand filter; or
    • Hose out the cartridge filter; or
    • Take apart the D/E filter and clean; and
    • Clean chlorinator cell if required.

Re-balancing chemicals. Adjust the alkalinity level to between 80-120ppm.

  • To increase the alkalinity, add sodium bicarbonate to the pool (never more than two kilos per day)
  • The re-balancing of alkalinity (to lower levels) will be addressed when re-balancing the pH levels.

Adjust pH to between 7.2-7.6

  • To reduce the pH Level, add pool acid (no more than 500mls at a time)
  • To increase the pH Level, add soda ash.

Super chlorinate your pool

  • Remove your pool cover and only replace after the chlorine has returned to normal range
  • Shock dose your pool with 500gms of granular chlorine for a 50,000 litre pool (or 10 litres of liquid chlorine).

Add algaecide

  • Add a long life algaecide, at the recommended dosage, to the specific volume of pool water.

Run your pool filtration equipment

  • Run for at least eight hours to thoroughly mix chemicals during the process of re-balancing
  • Adjust the filter timer to operate between 3-4 hours per day to maintain over the winter.

Use a pool cover!

  • If installing a pool cover over winter, wait until the chlorine level has reduced to between 2-3ppm.
  • Reduce the Chlorine Production Output (CPO on your chlorinator). The pool cover will maintain 90% of the chlorine (produced by your chlorinator) in the pool, as opposed to loosing 70% of chlorine in an uncovered pool. A pool cover is really worth it!
  • Check the chlorine level after one week. If the result is between 2- 3ppm, you will only need to check levels every two weeks thereafter.  If the level is higher, you will need to reduce the chlorine production (via CPO) and re-check levels one week later.
  • Check and adjust the pH level every two weeks.
  • The water level must sit half way up the skimmer box. Don’t forget that you will need to drain water out of your pool after rain.
  • Don’t ever completely drain your pool as hydrostatic pressure can cause serious damage – even to the extent of having pools ‘pop’ out of the ground!

Keep an eye on the pool every few weeks, remove any floating debris and even vacuum! With just a bit of time and a watchful eye over the winter months, you will save you a lot when the summer comes along! And it will be ready for you!

It’s a WinterKleen winter

Hands up anyone who loves leaves and constantly cleaning their pools!  No? It’s WinterKleen time.

Your clients will just love you if you can help them keep the leaves out of their pool all winter long!

With parts of Australia cooling down along with a seasonal change there is an increased demand on covering and protecting the pool from leaves, dirt and rubbish entering the pool.

The Winterkleen has long been the go-to answer for pool owners who experience high debris problems, and this year is no exception.

By covering the pool with the porous Winterkleen material all the dirt stays out of the water while letting the water pass through. So keeping the debris out of the pool it makes your customers life much easier and they love their pool (and you) a little more.

With a Winterkleen it makes looking after the pool so much easier. And this year we have had an increased demand. It’s ok – we are still custom making the covers and dispatching them in a matter of days!

The new Black Winterkleen has been a remarkable hit, steady sales of the new product has validated the latest addition to the range.

Know how to measure for a rectangular or a shaped Winterkleen pool cover? If you need a hand, feel free to give your local Area Manager a call.

Contact the Admin Centre or have a look at the How To videos here.

Or check out the All Year Round brochure here.

Importantly, let your customers and database know you have these products available, there may be sales waiting for you that you don’t know about!

Are you losing pool water over summer?

How to test if it’s a leak or evaporation

At this time of year with the heat of summer many pool owners think they have a leak in their pool as they seem to always have a hose hanging in the pool and constantly topping it up.

We’ve seen hoses with white chlorine bleached ends where they have been hanging in the pool. The owners complain that the hose has to stay there as they are tired of pulling it out every second day to top up the water level.

To see if you have a leak or if the water being lost is simply from evaporation; it’s easy!

Put a full bucket of water by your pool and measure the height of the water in your pool (and record it for accuracy). Wait a number of days to a week then measure how far the water level in the pool and the water level in the bucket has dropped. They should both drop the same amount in millimetres as water evaporates at the same rate regardless of surface area (it is only the volume that is different).

To put this into perspective, let’s work out how much water you are putting in your pool:

  1. Most hoses run at about 17 litres per minute. If you have a hose running flat out for 30 minutes you are using just over 500 litres. If you are topping up your pool 2 to 3 times per week then you are using between 1,000 to 1,500 litres per week. Or around 4,000 to 6,500 litres per month… and that is only at 30 minutes, how long do you run your hose for?
  2. If your pool is 9.2m by 4.5m, for every millimetre the water level goes down is 41.4 litres. So topping your pool up from around 1/3rd way up the skimmer box to about ½ way say 25mm means you are adding 1,035 litres of water to your pool.

Evaporation rates are higher over summer

To stop evaporation, cover your pool with a Daisy. This is effectively putting a lid on your pool to stop the water loss, not to mention saving chemicals and helping keep your pool a bit warmer and cleaner.
Daisy pool covers have been independently tested to retain 99.9% of water using the ASTM E96-2005 Water Vapour Transmission test.

For more information including the different types of evaporation for capital cities around Australia and how wind can more than double the daily evaporation rate, read our Evaporation Fact Sheet.

Keep safe with pool chemicals this summer

4 important tips to keep you safe

Without getting too technical about pool chemicals, you would have heard words like: disinfectants, oxidising agents, stabilisers and sanitising agents, along with good old chlorine.

There are some chemicals that have the ability to react with each other with some pretty nasty effects including fire and explosions. These reactions can be spontaneous at either room temperature or with slight heating.

Some pool chemicals can also be corrosive to both metal and our body. The effect on human tissue and metals depends on the chemical and the concentration so we want you to be as safe as possible to enjoy your pool. Here are four important tips to keep you safe:

  1. Always read chemical labels
  2. Never mix chemicals, even if they are the same brand
  3. Always add chemicals to water… not the other way around
  4. NEVER smoke around pool chemicals.

The chemicals used in and around your pool are perfectly safe to use if they are stored in a well ventilated cool dry place in closed containers out of the reach of children (and pets) and when handled correctly with appropriate personal protective equipment (especially glasses and gloves). We want to help make sure there are no nasty accidents so you can enjoy your pool with minimal fuss. Take care when handling all chemicals and always wash your hands with plenty of fresh water when you have finished and please especially avoid contact with your skin and eyes.

Remember… if you are not 100% sure how to handle any of your pool chemicals see your local pool shop for all the correct advice. Stay safe.

There has been some media attention around pools and adding chemicals; watch this video

Expert Tip: Make sure you have your resuscitation chart clear and visible in your pool area, not only in many parts of Australia it is a requirement, it can help you in a time of need to avoid panic and give lifesaving help.

Swim earlier, for longer and more often!

If you’re a pool owner without a Daisy, why not get yourself one?

A Daisy pool cover will have you swimming earlier by warming and insulating your pool water.

Most Daisy owners find that they can start swimming at least a month earlier than their Daisy-less cousins without a pool cover. And that’s not to mention the extra hours of swimming each day.

Without a pool cover a lot of us can get a bit chilly when the sun goes down and the pool water loses a lot of temperature as well. By having a Daisy on your pool during the day, it warms up the water nicely so that removing it for a late night swim easily becomes a very enjoyable swimming experience.

A pool cover also reduces the water loss due to evaporation. No your pool does not have a hole in it; the sun and especially wind evaporation can tear water out of your pool at an alarming rate without it covered. With a Daisy in place there is next to no evaporation.

If you are still reading this and need another reason to buy a Daisy, then of course there are the chemicals. A Daisy will reduce the chemical loss and even help keep your pool a bit cleaner.

If you haven’t already, go to your local Daisy Expert and demand one of Australia’s favourite pool covers. Find an Expert will help you check out where your nearest Daisy retailer store is.

Springtime… here comes the sun!

Six steps for getting pool ready this spring.

With the amazing spring time sunshine we’ve had lately, now is time we shake off our winter woollies and trade the indoors for the fresh, breathtakingly beautiful Aussie outdoors.

It’s also time to start getting your pool ready for swimming. Not all of us may want to pull the Daisy cover off and jump in just yet however one of these fine weekends, it’s worth checking your pool to see just what is going on.

The water may look clean, but let’s check it first. You have two options here; start testing and adjusting the water chemistry yourself, or just take a water sample down to your local pool shop for some expert advice.

Expert Tip: If you’re going to get advice, get it from one source as conflicting advice can be given when they don’t have the whole picture.

The cheapest and easiest way to maintain your pool is to keep your water chemistry in order year round. With all the rain over the winter, your pool water has been heavily diluted. Without a bather load or debris in the pool it may look crystal clear however it most probably has next to no chemicals in the water.

Make sure all your pool equipment is at the ready and no one has used the pool brush to sweep the driveway or the telescopic pole as a limbo bar. You want to make sure your telescopic pole, vacuum head and hose, skimmer head, brush and test kit are all in order and operational.

As soon as you, your family or visitors start swimming and the outside temperature rises, you may find your water chemical levels imbalance quite quickly.

Get pool ready, now.

Opening your pool in the lead up to summer should be a low stress, highly anticipated event for the entire family. Assuming you’ve done some winter preparation by covering the pool and protecting the pump, your pool’s opening day should proceed free of trouble.

What you’ll need

  • Leaf blower (or broom)
  • Water source and hose
  • pH pool test kit
  • Pool filter
  • Pool chemicals.

What you need to do: Six Easy Steps

These should get you and your pool ready for a whole summer of Marco Polo and diving for dollars.

  1. Remove Leaves and Winter Debris. You may encounter winter residual leaves, dirt, and general weather build-up on and around the pool. Before removing the cover, blow any leaves or debris off the pool cover and the surrounding deck or patio.
  2. Remove the Pool Cover. Once you remove the cover, take the time to clean it properly before storing. If you have the space, spread out the cover and spray it off with the highest pressure your hose allows.
  3. Check the Water Level. Check the skimmer water level. For the pump to function properly, the water needs to be in the middle of the skimmer opening for proper circulation. Add or remove water accordingly. While waiting for the pool to fill, check and test all handrails, ladders, diving boards, and slides for loose bolts or other potentially unsafe conditions.
  4. Clean and Prepare the Pump. Check to see that all equipment is in working condition. Check hoses, pumps, and filters according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Start the circulation system and allow it to run for eight to 12 hours.
  5. Check the Chemical Levels. After the eight to 12-hour run time, check the pH level, total alkalinity, hardness of water due to calcium, chlorine and so on. Fill the test tube from your test kit with water retrieved from at least 400mm below the surface. Collect your sample away from the pump inlet. Add the test-specific amount of agent and cap tube and shake. Do not cover the tube with your finger. Oils introduced from your hand can compromise the results. Add chemicals in proper order to balance the water.
  6. Take Inventory of Supplies and Safety Measures. Check all support and safety items related to pool safety. Do you have a first aid kit fully stocked and within easy reach? Is your cleaning equipment in working order? Is the gate and latch secure to prevent accidental access or to secure the pool when you are away on holiday or business?

Remember if you need a hand, your local pool expert is there to help. They have the experience to check your pool and equipment to make sure it is fit to swim in. You may even find it cheaper and easier to get the experts in to check it all for you.

All the best with it!
